Codes and Standards

Throughout the design, build, test cycle we followed a number of professional standards.

The Academy of Model Aeronautics publishes national safety codes and handbooks for model aircraft.

The American Institute of Aeronautics hosts an annual Design Build Fly (DBF) competition for model aircraft for which they publish battery, hardware, and structural regulations to ensure safety.

The Federal Aviation Administration regulates where we can test our craft outdoors such as drone parks.

ASTM International provides reputable data for foam and wood properties. These include STP1320-EB which details properties of expanded polystyrene (styrofoam) and D7766/D7766M-16 which describes damage resistance testing of layered materials.

Other Notable Codes:

• The International Standards Organization (ISO): the umbrella organization for coordinating standards throughout the world;

• The American National Standards Institute (ANSI): the umbrella organization for coordinating standards in the United States;

• The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME): one of the organizations in the United States that develops and maintains standards;
